Myself and social awareness issues.

You may want to read the edit at the end of the article to get  some context on why I wrote the post.

I've recently realized most of my social circles and cemented relationships revolve around social awareness issues. Most of the work I've given full attention to have been related to issues such as health awareness drives, safety drives, etc... either directly or indirectly (end client supporting issues or the project lead being involved with similar issues.)

I don't mean social awareness as in about product promotions, environment protection drives, anti-nuclear drives or a group in temporary state of poverty. I mean social awareness for issues such as cancer detection awareness, CPR training and similar issues that can mean the difference between life and death of persons I maybe close to or persons close to them. I'm not interested in awareness drives that are limited to particular regions or particular groups of people.

I don't really care if my work can save a company from going bust, I don't really care if it reduces energy consumption or reduces costs or increases awareness of company wares; such reasons are bonuses which I don't mind and I can/do complete such projects but such reasons aren't the key driving factor between me pursuing work in fields where I can maximize my potential/expertise or just doing whatever the next person wherever I'm living is doing.

I've left companies, decided not to pursue projects because the company hasn't embedded in their DNA a drive or even expressed an interest to support social awareness issues that directly affect real people. I'm no cyborg or production machine so I really cannot stay on long when I sense that there aren't social issues being promoted or supported by the organization from its core.

I may have only recently begun to offer brand/consumer related work (and experience/interaction design services) but that doesn't mean I have no clue what ticks a consumers interest. I've decided not to previously express the reasons about what drives me to pursue work as I wasn't available to pursue full time work or offer all my possible skills for hire until November 2009.

I've only bothered to contribute to Open Source Software (OSS) and related initiatives in the event that an organization promoting, supporting or resolving such issues could benefit from interface/interaction improvements I could bring to such projects as they could setup a site quickly and easily especially when turn around time for site installation, configuration and running is extremely limited and the creation of the site was an unscheduled event (eg. natural castrophes) and don't have days or weeks to learn how to do things.

I've completed projects from end-clients that did care about situations that mean the difference between life and death for real humans as well as projects which have end goals of improving the human condition (which indirectly allows for someone else to resolve such issues) even if the goals weren't written in exactly the same words.

That's been my approach for the last ten years (whether I have been conscious of the reason behind my approach to work opportunties or not) and I don't think I'd be abe to set a long term commitment to work opportunities without factoring in whether a project or its end-client promotes or supports awareness of issues, which mean the difference between life and death for real humans, from their core.

I'm not offering to train or teach an organization how to integrate social awareness, I have absolutely no interest in doing that and that's the exact opposite of the reason why I wrote the blog post which is to provide my skills and expertise (which I'm currently aware of or yet to identify) to work for organizations or their end-clients who really do care about social awareness for real humans from their core and aren't limiting their interests to particular regions or types of people.

Edit:

The above blog post is a bit of a rant that happened during a time frame of high fatigue (hence the harsh tone) when I mailed a rather well known corporation about which social awareness drives they support. Next thing I knew, within a couple of hours, their blog posted an article about a donation drive to an environmental cause which while well intention, was quite far away from what I had in mind and I sensed I needed to write something up quickly to avoid further misinterpretations even though my tone at the time was harsh,  extremely direct and rather raw.

I'm not deleting the blog entry (or hiding it) as it includes data points I could use to write up a more milder, gentle and refined article about how to get the most out of certain projects or particular focus groups as it reflects the thoughts of persons who at a particular points in time could be strongly affected by the actions a corporation takes on social awareness issues that closely affect them.

In a guest article for the Harvard Business Review, Tim Brown states that Edison implemented Design Thinking while inventing the light bulb.

Tim Brown also states that implementing design during the end stages of development cycle is a tactical use of design and at best "and results in limited value creation" compared to strategically implementing design at the earlier stages of development where design thinking processes can generate the most value.
